ONE YEAR IN: THE IMPACT OF BOYS & GIRLS MOBILE CLUB
April 2023 marks one year since Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County and the City of Port St. Lucie introduced the Boys & Girls Mobile Club to local parks and neighborhoods. Thousands of residents were given access to the Boys & Girls Clubs’ well-known, life-enriching programs through this program, ensuring that a Club is within reach for every young person in Port St. Lucie.
The idea for a roving Club was created to better serve youth by bringing Club access to areas that do not currently have a Clubhouse or school-based Club. From fitness and outdoor games to virtual reality and homework help, the Mobile Club is capable of bringing all aspects of being a Club member right to these underserved neighborhoods. Plus, Mobile Club participants enjoy free admission and free meals at each site making this program even more accessible to all Port St. Lucie residents.
“Through this partnership, we are impacting children in our community by giving them extra tools to grow into successful adults, and learn to enjoy participating in engaging activities outdoors in their neighborhoods,” said the City of Port St. Lucie Deputy Director of Neighborhood Services Alex Tasca. “By bringing Boys and Girls Clubs to the neighborhoods, we are expanding that service in a creative way, and bringing it to areas where physical Clubs are not currently located. We want to be responsive to the community’s need for more educational activities and engage with our young families and residents.”
In the 12 months that this program has been running, the Boys & Girls Mobile Club repeatedly visited eight locations and served more than 450 youth and their families. Roughly 50 free meals were served at each visit and participants enjoyed a range of physical and educational activities alongside Club staff and certified teachers.
“We are really proud of all that this program has been able to accomplish in the past year, and we plan to continue growing the Mobile Club so that all youth will be able to experience the Club impact,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County CEO Will Armstead. “Providing a safe space for kids to go and giving them fun, educational activities to take part in is our number one priority.”
The Boys & Girls Mobile Club currently operates in local parks on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., but will be expanding the schedule to include weekdays throughout the summer season.
